Know Thyself: The Heart/ The Cardiovascular system continued.

The cardiovascular system is responsible for blood circulation all over the body. The system is made of a network of blood cells, arteries, veins and lymph in a network that connect throughout the entire body. We cannot live without blood circulation. Without blood, the organs in the body will not get the supply of oxygen and nutrients needed for nourishment. Without blood we cannot keep warm or cool off, the body cannot fight infections, or get rid of waste products. Basically, without enough blood, we’d weaken and die.

About 7 to 8 percent of your total body weight is blood. At the center of circulatory system is the heart.

About the size of an adult fist is the size of a human heart. It is about 13 centimeters long and 9 centimeters broad and weighs about 320 grams. The heart is located slightly to the left of the chest cavity behind the lower part of the breastbone.

The work of the heart is to pump blood to the rest of the body. If a person is at rest, the heart beats about 70 times a minute and with each beat 60 to 90 milliliters of blood is pumped to the body. In one day, the heart pumps about 7,600 liters of blood.

A heart beat (contraction) begins when an electrical impulse from the sinoatrial node (inside the heart) moves through the heart’s muscles. This factor makes the heart to manufacture its own energy used to pump blood. The action is said to be myogenic in nature since the heart requires no simulation of the nerve cells to work (pump blood).

Blood circulates round the body and back to the heart in one minute. Each minute about 5 liters of blood is pumped by the heart.

The heart has 4 main chambers through which blood is pumped: right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle and left ventricle. The heart is made of relatively strong muscles. The left ventricle muscles have thick walls because it pumps blood out of the heart and into the body or lungs. The ventricles are therefore stronger than the auricles. Septum is the wall that separates the heart into two sides. The left and the right. The heart can be described as two pumps in one.

Oxygen filled blood enters through the left auricle; it’s pumped to the left ventricle then pumped to the body through the aorta. The right auricle receives deoxygenated blood from the body, the blood is pumped to the right ventricle, which is pumped to the lungs for refill with oxygen.

The heart muscle is the most important of the over 700 muscles in the human body, it works 24 hours a day without rest to keep us alive. Don’t go away. Kindly tick around for the next article as we focus on the best ways of taking care of the heart.
