Know thyself: The Cardiovascular system.

You will notice that taking a jog in the early morning feels rejuvenating to the body because the air is not contaminated. It is good fuel for the cells to spring to action.

We supply the body with oxygen when we breath in and expel Carbon dioxide and other gases when we breath out. Oxygen is the number 1 food to the cells. We cannot do without oxygen.

Deny brain oxygen and the brain cells start to die within minutes. But breathing in and out is not just not enough. Equally important is the flow of blood inside the body. Blood transports oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body cells. The two work together to keep us alive.

For our body to be at optimum, the hormones need to be transported to where they are needed. The Cells are living organisms and need nutrients and energy to function. They require essential minerals for repair. The cells produce waste that need to be removed and transported for elimination. All this function is taken care of  by the 4.73 liters of blood in the body powered by the heart. Cardiovascular is the most active system in our body. It never stops functioning from the day it is formed in the womb until death.

The Blood is composed of;

i) Red blood cells, which are filled with Hemoglobin to carry oxygen from our lungs to the rest of our bodies.
ii)White blood cells, which defend against infection.
iii)Platelets, which help blood to clot when injuries occur and plasma which Carries red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and facilitates transportation of nutrients.

Plasma is the liquid part of blood and is made of water, salts, and protein. About 60% of the blood is plasma. The solid part of blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. We can define cardiovascular/ circulatory system as the organ-system responsible for transporting blood round the body.

The Cardiovascular system is made of the heart-at the center, the blood and blood vessels. Oxygen enters the body through the breathing system in the lungs. At the alveoli, gaseous exchange take place and air is absorbed into the blood stream through capillary tubes. This oxygen rich blood is then pumped to the heart through the pulmonary vein and pumped to rest of the body through the Aorta.

Using network of arteries, veins and capillaries the heart is said to be the powerhouse of cardiovascular system by circulation about 7,000 liters of blood per day.

In the human heart there are four chambers: left atrium, left ventricle, right atrium and right ventricle. The blood that is returned to the right atrium is deoxygenated (poor in oxygen) and passed into the right ventricle to be pumped through the pulmonary artery to the lungs for re-oxygenation and removal of carbon dioxide.

The left atrium receives newly oxygenated blood from the lungs as well as the pulmonary vein which is passed into the left ventricle to be pumped through the aorta to the different organs of the body.

Blood carry along with-it dissolved minerals such as Amino acids and electrolytes to the cells. On the return trip, it transports waste, dead cells and Caborndioxide from the cells.
The circulatory system works closely with other systems in our body. It supplies oxygen and nutrients to all organs in the body working closely with respiratory system.

The endocrine system produces hormones that are transported by blood to do their work. The muscular system on the other hand provides for protection of arteries and cover for important cardiovascular organs like the lungs, the heart and the kidneys. Through the process of peristalsis, the digestive system provides cardiovascular system with minerals salts and water through absorption in the gut.

Cardiovascular system is the most crucial system in our body. We need to unpack it step by step to know what we need to do to keep diseases away. Azima is about prevention. Keep it here for more.
