Organs are a collection of tissues with similar functions. An organ system is a group of structures within the body that work together to perform a specific task. Our body is made up of 78 organs which operate in 12 organ systems. See some of the major organs on the diagram below

The twelve systems are as
1. The integumentary
These include the skin, hair and nails .
2. The muscular
Muscles are the only tissue in the body that has the ability to contract and therefore move the other parts of the body. Related to the function of movement is the muscular system’s function of maintaining posture and body position.
3. The skeletal
This includes basic framework of the body from bones, spinal cord, cartridges, ligaments and tendons
4. The Nervous
Brain, Spinal cord, Nerves and Sensory organs
5. The circulatory or Cardiovascular system
Blood, Heart, Blood vessel
6. The lymphatic
Lymph nodes, Lymphatic vessels, Lymph and other lymphoid organs.
7. The Respiratory System
Lungs and other structures that carry or conduct air to and from the lungs
8. The Endocrine
This contains glands that secrete hormones, chemical substances that regulates body activities
9. Urinary
Kidney and other structures that helps excrete waste, control water and electrolytes balance in the body
10. Reproductive system
There are organs and structures that help human reproduce for continuity.
11. The Immune system
This is an elaborate defense system that protects the body from pathogens, allergens and our own cells that have gone awry (cancer cells)
12. The Digestive system

This is the most crucial to our survival. It is made up of organs designed to ingest food, breaking it down into smaller substances that can be absorbed and eliminates the waste. It includes mouth, salivary glands , esophagus , stomach, liver , gallbladder, pancreas , intestines, colon, rectum and anus.

Of the 78 body organs, there are 5 vital organs. These are;
1. The brain
2. The heart
3. The kidneys
4. The liver and
5. The lungs

The human brain is the body control center; it receives and sends signals to the other body organs through the nervous system and through secreted hormones. Diseases affect any of these organs. We can avoid diseases if we take good care of the our body. We will learn how to do this in coming weeks.

This week we will be digging deeper into the key organs and systems. Keep it here to understand how our lifestyle and behavior are responsible for lifestyle diseases. This is not a complicated process. It is basic knowledge we should all have to make the right choices. We should preserve our body in optimal state but we cannot take good care of what we do not know. We cannot be good at taking care of our gadgets than our body. We can and should be aware of how we can prevent diseases to live to 120 years like Jeanne Calment who lived past 122 years. This is our wish all of us.
