Water and our bodies
From our introduction, we saw how Water plays a central and critical role in supporting aspects of life –water is needed to grow food, for sanitation, cooking, drinking and to facilitate life continuity at large. In this chapter we take a look of the relationship between our bodies and water. Why do we say water is an essential commodity for man? Is there bad or good water?
Man is made of water. Up to 60% of the human body is made of water. According to H.H. Mitchell, the brain is made of 75-80% water, the heart composed of 73% water, and the lungs are about 83% water. The skin contains 64% water, muscles and kidneys are 79%, and even the bones are 31% water.
How much water should we take a day?
Decision to take water is a lifestyle choice. It’s common knowledge that drinking water a day is essential for the body to function properly. However, do you know what is the amount demanded by the body to function optimally?
Because larger percentage of our body is made of water, we must constantly keep hydrating the body. This is necessary to account for the water lost through the skin by respiration, urine filtered by the kidney, through breathing out water vapor, and the intestines through bowel movements. Other ways that our body lose water include medications, diet, exercise and adjusting to environmental temperatures.
In Azima we support S.D.G.s goal No 3 . On Wellness. We pitch for lifestyle and behaviors like taking adequate water and we advise when and how to do this. Water is a solvent. It dilutes acids and toxins in the cells. As an example, we have published articles on cleaning the gut in past newsletters. We advocate for beginning the day by taking warm water with Ginger/lemon/turmeric /Apple Cider Vinegar/Aloe Vera to clean the gut and hydrate the body. These products help to reduce acidity in the gut. Alkaline acidity balance is critical for good health. The body work with the raw materials we feed it with.
When should we take water?
Nutrients and waste get in and out of the cells as water flow to various parts of the body. Without adequate water this process is hampered. It is therefore important that we follow a definite plan when adding volumes of water to our body for optimum performance. The water we take should be at the right temperature.
1) After waking up
Drink one glass of warm water after waking up to help activate your internal organs. Add lemon and other items mentioned earlier in your first glass of water. The water will help to reduce toxins in the gut before your first meal of the day.
Caution; do not take very hot water with lemon. It denature the vitamins in the lemon and the other products. Use a straw to take the lemon water to protect the integrity of your teeth from citric acid in lemon.
2) Before a meal
Drink a glass of warm water 30 minutes before a meal to help digestion. Remember not to drink any form of liquids too soon before or after a meal as the water will dilute the digestive juices. Drink water an hour after the meal to allow the Hydroelectric acid secreted by the stomach to break down the food for easy absorption of nutrients.
3) Before a bath
Drink one glass of water before taking a bath to help lower your blood pressure.
4) Before sleep
Drink one glass of water an hour before bedtime to replenish any fluid loss that can occur during the night.
5) Before and during workouts
Always take water before exercises to compensate for dehydration during workouts. It is advisable not to take water during a workout unless it is taking a long duration. During a heated workout, the body temperature and heartbeat per minute rises. It is not healthy to take cold water when your body temperature and heartbeats are elevated. This can affect the heart rhythm leading to serious cardiac complications.
