Am sorry last week we did not share our newsletter. I was overwhelmed by what I witnessed at KICC during KENCANSA 24 hour Relay for Life which I participated in courtesy of Nairobi Utumishi Rotary club. It was a sobering event that brought together various  people who have first hand exposure to cancer. We had a number of people who have conquered cancer, those who  survive with it and those in several stages of doing battle with it.

We also had caregivers to cancer victims from medics, family members and those who work in different organizations that work with cancer survivors. I was impressed by the positivity in the team.

However, I noted with a heavy heart that despite all the testimonies by the victims on what they were advised  to avoid when diagnosed with cancer (the constant was to take more fruits and vegetables. Yes food becomes medicine), most family members and caregivers still indulge in high acidic foods. In most tents that I visited, I could not find something I could eat because most of them were unhealthy stuff.

The participants who were providing catering services were offering the same stuff. I wondered. If the people who have experienced the ravages of cancer first hand happily indulge in junk food, what of the majority who have no clue what acidic food does to the body?

This strengthened my resolve to take the campaign on healthy eating to a higher level.

Allow me to revisit the topic on alkaline food choices and the acidic foods to avoid.

Keep your body in an alkaline state; then you will have fewer chances to suffer from chronic diseases. And it’s well known that you’re what you eat, that’s true, if you want to maintain your body in the alkaline state, you have to know which foods can help you.

The foods you eat have a direct impact on the pH levels in your body, some foods are more alkaline than others, which help your body maintain in an alkaline state, thus promoting energy, aiding in digestion, preventing diseases and also giving you clearer skin.

Additionally, an alkaline state in your body is essential for:

  • Lowering the risk of cancer

  • Maintaining a healthy weight

Start your day always with a glass of warm lemon water. Grate a lemon with its cover and sprinkle on your food. You can also squeeze a lemon on your acidic foods like fish if you’ve to consume.

Coconut is also a superfood that add benefits to your body in many ways. Coconut oil is the only cooking oil that isn’t acidic, it’s alkaline. It contains fatty acid that has great medicinal properties and the healthy saturated fats helps improve blood cholesterol levels, thus reducing the risk of heart disease.

Coconut water is a super drink that is highly alkaline. Form a habit of taking it regularly.

Carrot is a good source of vitamin A and provides many impressive health benefits, such as anti-cancer, anti-aging and also prevents heart attacks. Carrot is also good for your vision as beta-carotene has almost 40% lower risk of muscular degeneration.

Beets are alkaline-forming foods, which help both your physical and mental health in many ways, from cleansing the body, providing energy to treating depression.

  • Acidifying nuts such as pecans, peanuts, walnuts and cashews

  • Avocado oil

  • Olive oil

If you eat these acid-forming foods, you have to ensure you neutralize the acid with the help of the healthy and nutritious alkaline-forming foods we listed above at a ratio of 20:1.
